Diamond Head Crater (Le’ahi)

September 10th, 2007 by alexander

Diamond Head is the name of a volcanic turf cone on the Hawaiian Islands of O’ahu. This volcano was erupted 500,000 years ago and what left now is a crater. This state monument is located on the east coast of Waikiki, Honolulu.

It took about 15 mins drive from Waikiki beach. There are public bus (TheBus) and Waikiki Trolley service avaiable to the park entrance. It cost USD 2 for TheBus and USD 5 for Trolley.

Hawai’i public bus is called TheBus, and guess what their taxi called? .. TheCab. TheBus only cost 2 dollar per entry regardless how far is your journey, but their taxi is really a killer. I took a cab from hotel to airport which only 20 minutes journey, cost me 45 dollar.

Mahal lor!

Waikiki Trolley rings its bell when reaches a stop.

Diamond Head was famously known as Le’ahi to Hawaiian people. Le’ahi means Crater. But why does it called Diamond Head? According to the wikis, people found diamonds here before. But it turned out that it was just crystals. Should call as Diamond Fake Crater.

Diamond Head is one of the must-visit attraction in O’ahu, Hawai’i. Simply because the views from the top are amazing. You are able see about the half of the O’ahu island, the marvelous ocean scenery, and of course, the view of the volcano crater.

But the journey to the top of the crater isn’t as easy as driving up your car to the peak. It involves a lot of hiking and climbing stairs.

From the park entrance, 15 minutes walk through the Kahala Tunnel to the visitor center. This is the only place with public restroom and provides drinking water.

The get ready to hike through rocky path for about another 40 mins …

- Recommended attire for hiking.

Then climb up the narrow staircase leading to a pitch-dark tunnel. Navigate in the dark tunnel for about 100 metres, then climb up another spiral staircase. It was kind a cool experience … .. unfortunately no photo was taken.

Then at last, climb for another set of staircase..

and then enjoy the view…

The AMAZING view. Waikiki beach view from Diamond Head.

The highly density neighbourhood in O’ahu.

The well-developed Honolulu city.

The volcano le’ahi.

LOL

Hiking to the Diamond Head took about an hour and a half with lots of energy and sweat, but the scenery made all the efforts worthwhile.

But guess what, there are other sightseeing activity too..

Is that a corset?

This is where you can find well-dressed ladies hiking with their Camel boots.

Cheers!
