Flower that bloom at midnight

by alexander on Mar.15, 2009, under General

I took this photo back in 2006 at my mum’s garden. This plant has a few nicknames; Night Blooming Cereus, Dutchman’s Pipe, Queen of the Night and perhaps in Malaysia; Bunga Bakawali.

As some of the nickname suggests, this plant only bloom at midnight and the flower only last for less than an hour. If you look at the flower, it is magnificant. Its bigger than your palm and produce strong flower fragrant.

In Chinese, there is a saying “昙花一现” (tanhua yi xian) which means “to bloom briefly”, alluding to the short lifespan of the flower, which only lasts one night.

Isn’t it beautiful?
